PCLinuxOS 2008 Soon

It looks like PCLinuxOS 2008 release will be sooner rather than later. The repositories are frozen as of this morning (found via forum post here…you must be logged in to view).

During the next 2-3 days, it would be wise NOT to update to facilitate this freeze and there would be less chance for problems if you abstained.

Stay tuned for more details…when I know, you know

Note: I’m basing my conclusion of a PCLinuxOS release “soon” on the fact that the repositories are frozen. Does that mean it will happen immediately? No…I only speculate and invite the community to speculate with me. Release still could be weeks away and I wouldn’t know it.

Not sure where you got the idea that there would be a release.
Just read the forum post you referenced, no one mentions a release. It announced a freeze of the repos not a release.
I spoke with several developers, the next release is coming when its ready, but not in the next few days.

Better be a release, or even Debian puts out a release faster than PCLOS.

Changturkey - I agree with you 100%. I really like this distro but this super slow release cycle doesn’t work for me.

you guys do realize that there is a “rolling release” with pclinuxos right? That means you’re running the next version if you keep up to date through synaptic.

There really is no SLOW release because the release is happening all the time. The ‘release’ that PCLinuxOS puts out is just a new base for new users that haven’t installed PCLinuxOS. It makes it so you don’t have to download a ton of packages (newer base vs. older base). Strictly speaking…PCLinuxOS doesn’t need to be like all the other distros out there because of this rolling cycle.

But we do need to make a new release with a new kernel because a lot of people are posting that PCLinuxOS 2007 won’t install due to the old kernel.

Maybe a more frequent release of an updated livecd would be better for users on slow connections, but besides that it would put pclinuxos a little more in the picture on news sites and review sites.
Because the slow release cycle some people even come to ask me if pclinuxos is still active.
Anyway if been running pclinuxos from testing and it’s even more stable than most other distro’s!

Sure it’s rolling, I understand that, but drivers and such need updating, and there’s gotta be new features somewhere, so yeah a new release like every 8-12 months would be nice. The installer has always been quite finicky, and sound has never worked with my Sigmatel STAC out of the box.

Sure, the release seems slow. But I am sure Tex and the RG are working hard, and this delay has some greater reasons behind it.

If you go to a roadside food-stall you get foods served very quickly. But to taste 5star food you really have wait for sometime. And pclos is no less than 5star. So, I wish all to wait patiently, something great is cooking!

i don’t get youb guys.
it works quit perfect for so much time.
do you really need this bazzzz of new release every 4 months ?
if so, then get ubuntu….
pclos works great for me and hopefully that for most of you.
and for those who can’t install it due to whatever reasons, then, try other distro and don’t stick to pclos.
i like it as it suits my machine.

DoronB, that doesn’t make any sense. Not ever make a new release?

There’s a lot of new hardware out there which needs a new kernel.

KDulcimer, I understand what DoronB is saying, If you want a new release every 4 months go with another distro. PCLinuxOS is a very stable distro that you don’t need to really be updating everything every few months. There are updates to packages that are released often enough to keep up with their releases, and also kernel updates, like Devnet said it is a rolling release so that you wont really have to reinstall a whole new distro ie : FC8 to FC9. because if incompatibility issues.
A new CD release for first time installers is a great, but for existing users the updates will keep up with a new cd release. There are a few things that I would like to see be updated, but these are generally minor in the scope of the whole picture.

I sincerely believe that Tex need to open up to more developers and communicate with them about changes in srpms spec.
I don’t see many developers flocking to pclinuxos to help with their release.
Pclinuxos is too controlled to my liking and there is still problems even with the stable repo for some packages. Fellow packagers should communicate with each other and there should not be a “leader” for packaging.
You should see how archlinux, another rolling and binary base distro doese their packaging. Latest but still stable.

The good news is…Tex has opened it up and this release promises to boast more developers on it than any other previously released version.

There is also a HUGE amount of 3rd party packagers that maintain a repository for addons…many of these addons are absorbed into PCLinuxOS through the Santa’s Little Helper project here at mypclinuxos.com

I’ve never heard anyone mention this, but with a rolling release like PCLinux, wouldn’t it make sense to have the most recent updated live CD available from the download site? Kind of a snapshot of the current build. I don’t know how much trouble it is to do that, but it seems backwards to download a copy that may be as much as a year or two old, then spend hours updating it to the current state. Sure would solve a lot of problems and make a lot of people much happier.

I am not sure what else you can do with a near perfect OS (PCLinux) I believe me I have tried more than a few. My thanks to Tex and the gang for a great job on the current ‘07 release.

Does anyone know how to successfully install KDE4 on pclinuxos?
I keep getting dependency errors.
Thats the only issue.

I figured it out.
Kde4 was okay , but not really to my tastes.
Great DE but too many options.

I went back to my TinyMe, Windows dual boot.
If Kdulcimer were a girl…. heh.

Pclos and its derivatives are the fastest OOB working distros I have ever loaded.

I’m sticking with Pclos.

I partly agree with the constantly-updated-LiveCD method.
But a release for the sake of a new number or tag is not a good idea. Sometimes, Ubuntu and Mandriva break things in new releases. Fedora9 installed a half-done new installer package that irritated me.
So, rolling is a great idea is you can occasionally download 1GB or so and run a mklivecd/remaster to get your up-to-date iso. Then burn it to disk and you have your copy of the “latest release”
That, I think is the whole idea of keeping MiniMe 2008 small - take more only if you want more.

Well thought-out, in my opinion.
With this strategy, releases are just labels.

Of course the fine print is the occasional 1-1.5 GB download.
Given that all other distros put up lists of updated packages, I think PCLOS cant do much more than this.

My opinions, ymmv.

MiniME is great! But even it seems somewhat outdated in the fast-moving world. The need of the hour is a 2009-MiniME to meet the upcoming notebooks/desktops. But I am happy with the whole philosophy of PCLinuxOS - stability and usability. And am ready to wait some time for next release. By the way, good things don’t come easily.
