On my 5th reinstall of Pclos, and on my 4th remaster CD.  I'm starting to get the hang of it, and coming to agree that an add-on disk might be the only way - so far it is very hard to get all of the good stuff, not even the necessary, in one single CD.  I have a half dozen boxes around for further testing, my main platform right now is an
For what I am trying to achieve I need:
1.-SOLID parental control tools.  DansGuardian looks great, but haven't been able to get it to work right yet.  But it might not be that important, see 3.-
2.-Spanish user interface, and suitable tools for getting it to be ethnically adaptable, i.e, Aymara, Quechua, etc when available and or enabling users to work on that.  Friends of mine have done an Aymara Abiword already.
3.-Able to be independent of having a fast internet connection - maybe ditch internet connectivity altogether but keep good LAN abilities.  Most users in Bolivia have no access to fast internet and there is no reason to assume things will change any time soon.  This means also to have access to a CD-based Wikipedia or such.
4.- obviously KDEedu and Gcompris, at a minimum.  I don't seem to be able to run them in Spanish yet, even though supposedly that is available.
5.- OOo, etc

I want to test Edulos also, see if we're in the same track, contribute a lot if so, 'cause I need to get this done.
My project right now is a Bolivia distro geared for education/training

Hi Yamaplos

welcome here
let me handle point per point
1. we too are still looking for easy and solid parental control tools (and a easy gui for DANS Guardian would be part of that), I'm eying another project here http://www.mypclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?board=74.0
2. spanish user interface: we do have a team that works hard on the localisation of pclinuxos maybe they can help you further. this is the link to the spanish board.
http://www.mypclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?board=49.0
3. it is possible to create a local repo of all packages and while it does take a good connection to initially download all of those, updating these once a month is then less of a hassle. I keep them on a spare harddrive and use them over the lan for all my rigs
here is the code I use:
Code:
rsync -av --progress --delete --exclude=RMPS.exp/ --exclude=RPMS.sam*/ --exclude=SRPM*/ ftp.ibiblio.org::pub/linux/distributions/texstar/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2007/ /Tools/localrepo/pclinuxos/2007
this does download the packages from the main ibiblio site, but you can add any repo that is closer to you
3b. CD based wikipedia? i do know that there are torrents available but then we're talking DVDs and the question is how long do they stay relevant and is there one in spanish too??
4. obviously kde edu should be available in spanish (installing kde-i18n-es, locales-es should do the trick). the gcompris spanish sound files are also available in the repos and when you select them it automatically adds the locales-es package (oh don't forget to manually add all the tuxpaint stamps to make it more fun). I then select the language in the preferences and when i go to the reading exercises to check they do work in the different languages i added

5.for Ooo and the etc you should have a look at their respective websites and see if they provide spanish builds. to start using these you will have to repack them and how to do that can be easily learned together with the little santa team http://www.mypclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?board=83.0

6. What are we doing: at this moment we are focusing on educational packages. these will be made available in the repos together with a meta package (a task) that will draw in all the packages and dependencies. a list of packages that i am working on can be found on the wiki http://www.mypclinuxos.com/doku.php/santalittlehelper:contribrecord maybe in a later phase we might start with a full distribution but at this moment what we do becomes part of mainstream pclinuxos so that everybody can profit from the efforts, without us having to focus on hardware support, problems with cds and boots,.... if pclinuxos runs on your pc, our packages should work too.

7. We are looking for testers: people who are willing to try the packages we create to see if they run stable before we add them to the main repos. contact me through pm and I'll give you the rest of the details.

Good luck with the bolivian edition and do have a look at the rest of the of the projects, you'll be able to learn a lot to finish your project.

Hi Rayman
no need to apologize for your english, it is quite good, and if you're eleven it is excellent.
oh en je kan natuurlijk ook nederlands gebruiken als je niet weet hoe het juist te formuleren in english.

when I finally get the things uploaded to the test server I will give you all a buzz so you can test and tryout

Cheers & Groetjes

I will be watching this thread for any information related to this.  I live in a small and rural area of US and their IT system leaves something to be desired, with limited funds in which to expand and improve.  Actually the best thing that they have going for them is a fiber network LAN!  My wife teaches at the local high school and I run a website for one of the elementary schools.  I am eagerly awaiting for something to test on this project.  I do not have an extra unused box laying around, but I will be glad to test it in virtualbox for starters.  Plus, I have an 8 year old that likes linux!  Well actually she likes the name "puppy" in puppy linux, but I can get around this.

If she likes puppies then we can definitely be helpful Cheesy just have a look at our wallpaper

I just uploaded the srpms to the mypclinuxos space where they will hopefully be thoroughly tested. I will aslo start uploading the rpms to outr ftp server so you can add them to your repos too and test them out.

I'm gonna hold off on adding the login & splash to KDELOOK until everything is approved and public... that way, I can add a link to the meta-package. I think it will confuse people to see it & not know what the heck it's for?? Smiley
Any luck in adding them as default yet?

hi gang I am back and still more than willing to try out any piece of software you wish to throw my way. I even have a new kind of bleeding edge computor to play with as well as some older hardware.

while we are somewhat on the topic about accessibility for handicapped and challenged people I did come accross this web page.

http://www.indiaprwire.com/pressrelease/information-technology/200802167408.htm

I would very much like to find out more about what these people are doing.

anyway I still have ideas I plan on working on when I can find time. not that I can code or even build packages or anything like that but I have concepts and contacts I hope.

I will try and stay in touch more from now on
