Hello MyPCLinuxOS community! We need your help. Our hosting plan is coming up for renewal in the first week of January and we are about 70 dollars short due to decrease in traffic as of late.

Each month, MyPCLinuxOS.com serves out 1-2 millions site hits with 30-50 thousand unique IP hits. Those hits are ONLY for the MyPCLinuxOS.com domain. That’s a ton of traffic! Just think of all the other hits on domains sponsored by MyPCLinuxOS.com like pclinuxoshwdb.com, pclosmag.com, hack.mypclinuxos.com, and beautification.mypclinuxos.com. Take all other domains and projects hosted by mypclinuxos.com, and we reach over 10 million hits with over 200 thousand unique IP’s served.

To keep operating at an optimum level, we purchase a large hosting package each year. Advertisements generally kept us afloat in our first year, but overages in bandwidth can really eat into advertisement profits. You can help us to keep things oiled and working with a small donation. For those of you who are regulars in the main PCLinuxOS Forums or readers of Distrowatch.com, you may have noticed that the Ripper Gang announced the release of Beta 2.

The list of download locations and full release announcement are here.

Remember that this release may not be upgradeable to the final one so the Ripper Gang requests that you install this and test it (advanced users only please) but not on production systems (separate partition would be adviseable).

The localization project is more alive than ever

Hello,

The localization team is proud to introduce you our new translation interface: http://l10n.ipclinuxos.com

As you can see, there are all our core gettext domains present in the project list.

Pootle, the software used to display the translation interface, is not the main storage for our translations, it has the .po files just checked out from our brand new SVN:

Pootle admins (David, Alessio aka Gianvacca, Pierre-Henry aka didouph) can easily commit the changes to SVN via Pootle interface.

Anonymous users can only view and suggest translation changes - they cannot directly translate. To be able to do so, you need to register an account and to select your language(s) from the list. Then you’ll be able to see and accept other’s suggestions, directly translate messages in your language(s), download .mo files and more.
When you want to have your changes committed to SVN, just send a message to any of the admins or put a request in our google group http://groups.google.it/group/pclinuxos-i18n.

PELinuxOS alpha iso

Sorry for the delay of info to all interested in the status of PELinuxOS (Producer’s Edition Linux Open Studio). An alpha ISO is in the works at the moment. It is completely vanilla as of this writing, meaning no work by the team has gone into it. It is essentially a test iso of all the programs being incorporated into PELinuxOS to determine proper ISO size and finalize which programs are being added. If anyone is interested in the details of the project’s status, please head over to our section of the forum and see what’s brewing. To give an overview, a lot of work is going into the “beautification” of PE as well as the perfection process of our RT kernel. We are nearing the final countdown of the list of programs included as well as the general/overall look, feel and power of Open Studio. Stay tuned to this media production breakthrough that will redefine the way you all look at PCLOS!

What is PELinuxOS?

Well… It is, essentially, a media production remaster of the famous (and phenominal) PCLinuxOS. PELinuxOS (Producer’s Edition Linux Open Studio) is a finely tuned compilation of audio production, video production, 3D editing, graphic design and authoring programs. Utilizing a real-time kernel, Open Studio gives the user complete control of there media production needs. With our own twist to what makes PCLOS so great, we wish to keep the new user (of linux AND of media production) in mind, so on top of offering the best software out there, we will not be satisfied until we are able to also offer as complete of a collection of tutorials, manuals and references as possible to our audience so that they are able to hit the ground running in the media production industry. Keep your eyes posted on the Producer’s Edition section of the forum if you wish to keep up!

Santa’s Little Helper Team Update

Due to the recent efforts of the development team on releasing the next ISO and the subsequent (temporary) freezing of the repos, there has been little new work done in the Santa’s Little Helper project this month. However, the team members are far from being idle. Much of our time is being spent on helping the development team to test and evaluate the test releases and the the migration, as well as the inevitable cleanup of the merged testing repo.

Additionally, the project has a well defined plan moving forward. As soon as the repositories are thawed, our first order of business will be to re-evaluate the backlog of well over 150 contribution submissions to make sure everything still works. Of course, there is always ample opportunity to continue updating existing packages and following up on new Package Suggestions from the main PCLinuxOS Package Suggest forum.

As always, the Santa’s Little Helper team welcomes all newcomers. Packaging can be both very fun and an effective way to get a deeper understanding of PCLinux, RPM, and Linux in general.

Beautification Team Update

Well, as you all know by now… we have been hard at work on graphics for the 2009 release. It was nice to see all the nice comments on the work so far, and to all the “nays”…. thplplplttplpltt (hehe)

We continue our work for the next TR and hope to produce some work which some users will like enough to keep for at least a little while. We definitely plan on releasing a couple of theme options in the end for the final release… and expect that our many gifted artists in the community will continue to produce even more in the future.

GTK-liveinstall ready for public

Iain Jackson, Clare Oldie and Alessio Adamo are happy to announce that gtk-liveinstall is ready for you. In the case you missed the previous episodes, gtk-liveinstall is a script (an installer) which will create a ‘live’ operating system installation on the storage device of your choice.

For example, an internal hard disk drive, a USB memory stick, a flash memory card…

The installed operating system will be a clone of a live-CD but with a boot option to save the changes you make to the operating system on your storage device. You can clone a live CD when running live from it, from a normal install if you have a live CD to hand, or from a downloaded live CD ISO file.

You can install onto a ready-formatted device or you can choose to clear a device and partition it within this installer.

The script has also a full localization support, which means that it can be easily translated into different languages. At the moment Italian and Hungarian are fully supported, while Czech is partially supported.
